The Vehicle Damage Panel Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to specialise in the structural repair of vehicles following accidents. This programme prepares you to remove, repair, and replace vehicle body panels using a range of specialist tools and techniques, restoring vehicles to manufacturer standards.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in a bodyshop or accident repair centre while receiving structured training at 91Ö±²¥. The course typically lasts 36 months and equips you with the technical knowledge and practical skills to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced automotive environment

You’ll learn how to assess and repair vehicle body damage, remove and replace panels, and use advanced joining techniques. The course covers:

Vehicle chassis and body alignment
Use of panel repair tools and equipment (e.g. jigs, spot welders, bonding tools)
Welding techniques including MIG, TIG, and brazing
Riveting and adhesive bonding
Interpreting technical data and manufacturer specifications
Health and safety in the bodyshop environment
Quality control and the impact of rework on time and cost
You’ll also develop skills in identifying supplementary damage, working with modern materials (e.g. carbon fibre, aluminium), and using diagnostic tools to ensure structural integrity

There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Vehicle Damage Panel Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in automotive repair and a commitment to learning. This programme is ideal for individuals who have completed a Level 2 qualification or have relevant experience in vehicle body repair.

However, some employers may set their own entry requirements. If you have not yet achieved a GCSE Grade 4/C (or equivalent) in English and Maths, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in these subjects as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—91Ö±²¥ will support you throughout your training

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.

At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

A practical skills test
A knowledge test (online)
A professional discussion supported by your portfolio
These assessments confirm your competence and readiness to work independently as a qualified Panel Technician

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, 91Ö±²¥ is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as a Panel Technician, Panel Beater, or Body Repairer. You may also choose to specialise in electric vehicle body repair, structural diagnostics, or progress to a supervisory or technical training role.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a long-term career in the automotive repair industry.
