The Painter and Decorator Level 2 Apprenticeship is ideal for individuals who want to start a career in the construction and property maintenance sector. This programme prepares you to work in domestic and commercial environments, enhancing and protecting buildings through painting, decorating, and surface preparation.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed while receiving structured training at 91Ö±²¥. The course typically lasts 24 months and equips you with the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to work safely and efficiently in a variety of settings, from homes and offices to schools and hospitals

You’ll learn how to prepare surfaces, apply paints and wallcoverings, and use a range of tools and materials to achieve high-quality finishes. Training includes the use of water- and solvent-based coatings, wallpaper hanging, and specialist decorative techniques.

You’ll also gain knowledge of health and safety regulations, environmental sustainability, and how to interpret technical drawings and specifications. The course covers both traditional and modern methods, including the use of digital design tools and sustainable practices

There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Painter and Decorator Level 2 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in the trade and a willingness to learn. This programme is ideal for school leavers or individuals looking to retrain in a practical and creative profession.

However, some employers may set their own entry requirements. If you have not yet achieved a GCSE Grade 2/E (or equivalent) in English and Maths, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 1 in these subjects as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—91Ö±²¥ will provide full support to help you achieve these essential qualifications alongside your training.

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.

At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:

A practical skills test
A professional discussion
A review of your portfolio
These assessments confirm your competence and readiness to work independently as a qualified painter and decorator

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, 91Ö±²¥ is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as a Painter and Decorator in a range of settings. You may also choose to specialise in areas such as heritage restoration or decorative finishes, or progress to a supervisory or site management role.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a long-term career in the construction and property maintenance industry.
